Dean, Summer School
ITS Teaching & Learning has been exceptionally helpful to Summer School faculty who are migrating face-to-face courses online in summer. ITS T&L has been a partner along with the Carolina Office for Online Learning and the Center for Faculty Excellence in introducing faculty to online teaching and then providing how-to guidance. With Sakai as the online learning management system, ITS T&L workshops and one-on-one consultations have helped faculty set up their physical/online course space and expand their knowledge of Sakai and its tools.
Leading workshop sessions for ITS T&L has been Thao Nghi Tu, who has demonstrated Sakai’s capability at several workshops in recent years. She focuses on tools that help faculty better organize their course sites and help make their courses more engaging for students. One tool in particular is the Sakai Lessons tool that helps instructors organize course content, activities and media on a single page. She shows them how to use that tool to build those lessons in their course space to streamline the student learning experience and keep students on track. Faculty are introduced to VoiceThread where instructors and students can share sets of slides that contain media and have conversations around that media; Warpwire that allows streaming of videos; and Zoom for web conferencing.
After the workshops, faculty set up individual consultations with Thao Nghi and other ITS T&L staff, some who have also been a part of the workshops. The workshops serve as an initial point of contact for faculty, especially to make them aware of the breadth of services available to them through ITS T&L, COOL and CFE. The consultations follow, often held in the faculty members’ offices. Faculty feedback has been positive about their ITS T&L one-on-one interactions and the practical information shared so they know how to deliver their course content, ensuring students are engaged and learning outcomes achieved.
